Inspirations

Many readers have emailed me to ask if Rex's tales (tails?) are purely fictional, or based all, or part, on real encounters. Most are based on my experiences, some are totally fabricated.

In "Something in the Air" and "Rex to the Rescue", for example, "the Maltese" is one of the great loves of my life, Constance, and chronicles our first encounter and our first date, respectively, though loosely ;-) . "The Golden Retriever" is my ex-wife of 13 years, a striking and astonishingly smart and creative Dutch woman many years my junior, and the story "Rex Backs Off" describes our first encounter in a bar in Toronto that I ran with a couple of partners on Avenue Road some years back, while "Life's a Rex! (NOT...) records just how painful one of our last encounters as a separated couple was for me.

"Rex Likes Poodles" is fictional, but is the first story I wrote while musing about the 'animal instincts' that both human sexes possess, but are rarely really 'tuned into'.
